History
A favorite among aficionados and the Cuban people alike, Romeo y Juieta cigars are among the most popular Cuban cigar brands. Established in 1875 by Inocencio Alvarez and Manin Garcia, the brand takes its name from the famous Shakespearian tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Much like Montecristo cigars and the Count of Monte Cristo, the story was read to the torcedores by lectors and was the most popular story in the factory.
Romeo y Julieta cigars would immediately go on to success, earning several gold medal awards which are still on the brand logo today. While a popular cigar, the brand wouldn’t fully become a Cuban staple until it was purchased by Jose “Pepin” Rodrigues Fernandez.
Throughout the years Romeo y Julieta became increasingly popular. So popular that Sir Winston Churchill himself came to visit the factory and admire the craftsmanship. During his visit, the “Churchill”cigar size was born specifically for the PM himself.
Shortly after Rodriguez’s death, the factory was seized by the Cuban government after the Cuban Revolution. The Romeo y Julieta we love and enjoy today still follow the same recipe of medium-full bodied goodness from premium Cuban tobaccos. In a wide variety of expertly made vitolas, Romeo y Julieta’s expert rollers are known for their skillfully made specialty figuados such as salomones, pyramides, cazadores, and of course, the Churchill vitola.
